ASH 2020 | Features of COVID-19 infection in hematology patients

William Wood, MD, MPH, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, discusses an analysis of COVID-19 infection features and outcomes in patients with hematological malignancies, using the ASH Research Collaborative COVID-19 Registry for Hematology. Blood cancer patients are often older and have comorbid illness, as well as immune dysfunction and immunosuppression due to their cancer treatment. To understand the risks associated with COVID-19 infection in these patients, data was collected from patients with current or previous hematological disease and a COVID-19 diagnosis. The data showed that these patients experienced significant morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 infection, particularly individuals with a poor cancer prognosis. Data accumulation to expand the registry is ongoing. This interview took place during the 62nd American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting and Exposition, 2020.
