“Partners Physician Academy: Effectiveness of a Program to Address Gaps in Hemostasis Training for Early Career Hematologists” is an oral presentation this year at ASH. There is a shortage of classical hematologists who are well trained in hemostasis and thrombosis or coagulation despite an increased demand in this area. This shortage is due to a lack of mentorship, less financial incentive, and concerns within the job market.
The Partners Physician Academy was developed in 2022 to address these gaps. The course is a five-day in-person delivered course by experts in hematology and hemostasis from across the United States. The program supports networking, communication by building ties with people who are also early in their career and with their mentors, and provides in-depth training. A variety of different educational modalities are utilized to optimize learning, including lectures, small group activities, games, expert panels, case discussions, and hands-on musculoskeletal ultrasound training. There are also lunch roundtables to discuss cases.
Participants’ knowledge in the area is tested prior to participation and they are given a personalized educational report and provided curated resources to address some of the gaps in knowledge that they may have. Post participation knowledge is again assessed. Ongoing enrichment activities are provided through monthly webinars post program.
This presentation assessed the effectiveness of the program through learner satisfaction, objective knowledge gains, and reports of utility of knowledge gained in subsequent practice. The number of test questions per content domain were proportional to the instructional time spent on each topic. A total of 78 participants were assessed over the three years of the program to date, and they represented 25 states in the United States. There was a high completion rate of pre and post test and satisfaction surveys ranging between 98% and 83% respectively. There were significant knowledge gaps demonstrated in all domains with an overall increase to 88% from 65% at baseline post course. Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the program and levels of support provided by the program. In addition, 100% of the respondents reported that they had applied the information gained to their clinical practice, and 90% reported that they had reached out to their academy contacts to discuss challenging cases, potential projects, or to obtain career advice.
In conclusion, the program was overwhelmingly well-received with significant knowledge gains in all content domains that were applied to clinical practice. Future directions for the program include development of more enrichment activities, longitudinal follow-up with investigation into long-term practical impact of the Physicians Academy.
