ASH 2024 | A virtual hospital approach in SCD: remote biometric, QoL, and hospitalization monitoring

Sanne Lugthart, MD, PhD, University Hospitals of Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, Bristol, UK, comments on the potential of a virtual hospital approach for managing sickle cell disease (SCD), highlighting the importance of monitoring patients’ biometrics and quality of life (QoL) outcomes before, during, and after hospitalization. A pilot study found that patients with SCD exhibit significant changes in activity levels, sleep patterns, and quality of life scores prior to and after hospitalization, with fatigue being a common symptom. Dr Lugthart hopes that this virtual hospital approach, combined with wearable technology and tracking of patient-reported outcomes (PROs), can empower patients to take control of their condition, promote fast recovery, and prevent hospital readmissions. This interview took place at the 66th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.
