EHA 2025 | Unmet needs in sickle cell disease: striving for equitable access to care

In this interview, Caterina Minniti, MD, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York City, NY, comments on the significant unmet needs in the field of sickle cell disease (SCD). She highlights that the most pressing issue is the lack of equitable access to comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for all patients, regardless of their economic background or geographical location. Dr Minniti emphasizes that there is a need to prioritize improving access to high-quality care, particularly in regions where SCD is most prevalent, such as Africa. This interview took place at the 30th Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) in Milan, Italy.

Of course, the unmet needs depend on whom you ask. If you ask the patients or the provider, the needs will be vastly different. But we all agree that one of the major unmet needs is the availability of comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for everybody, not just people in a higher economic environment, but also where sickle cell disease is most prevalent in Africa. And that just came from Abuja, Nigeria, where we had our fifth global symposium on sickle cell disease and I saw firsthand the disparities in access to healthcare in Nigeria where the vast majority of children with sickle cell disease were. So before we even think about novel therapeutic options, what I really think is the biggest gap is access to comprehensive, compassionate, and competent care.
