STFOM 2024 | Opportunities and challenges associated with implementing LLMs into medicine and clinical care

Stephen Gilbert, PhD, Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health at Dresden University of Technology, Dresden, Germany, discusses the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing large language models (LLMs) into clinical care. Although LLMs have the potential to be used in several medical applications, such as in the molecular design of precision drugs and as clinical decision-support systems, the currently available models pose questions about safety, which hinder their implementation in this setting. Prof. Gilbert highlights that, as LLMs are dynamic and changing, there is a lack of control over the consistency of the output these models provide. This interview took place at the Shaping the Future of Medicine (STFOM 2024) congress held in Leipzig, Germany.
