In this video, Perla Eleftheriou, MRCP, FRCpath, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, shares insights into the challenges faced when treating adult patients with thalassemia, highlighting the heterogeneity of care depending on resources, location, and tools available. Dr Eleftheriou emphasizes the difficulties of managing chronic blood transfusions, iron overload, and their complications, as well as the need for a dedicated thalassemia team. She also stresses the importance of addressing mental health struggles and quality of life concerns in these patients, which are often inadequately supported. This interview took place at the 4th ESH Translational Research Conference on Pathophysiology and Clinical Advances in Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia in Dublin, Ireland.
