While there have been advances in the diagnosis and treatment of light chain (AL) amyloidosis, one of the major unmet needs in this disease is early diagnosis. Faizi Jamal, MD, City of Hope, Duarte, CA, shares insights into his work exploring the diagnostic utility of left atrial and right ventricular strain analyses in patients with AL amyloidosis as a potential novel approach for early diagnosis. As amyloid proteins circulate throughout the heart and may be deposited in various chambers, Dr Jamal explains the rationale for exploring left atrial strains. This study demonstrated that left atrial strains were reduced in patients with AL amyloidosis and cardiac involvement, and other measures of cardiac function are being explored. This interview took place at the XIX International Symposium on Amyloidosis (ISA) in Rochester, MN.
