Wally Smith, MD, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, highlights that implementing the biopsychosocial model of pain care for sickle cell disease (SCD) requires a multidisciplinary team approach similar to that used in cancer, diabetes, or hemophilia centers. Prof. Smith highlights his career-long efforts to establish these care teams for adults with SCD. This interview took place at the 19th Annual Scientific Conference of the Academy for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia (ASCAT 2024) in London, UK.
