EBMT 2023 | CMV reactivation after matched unrelated donor & haploidentical transplantation

Joseph McGuirk, DO, The University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, comments on a study that investigated the incidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation in patients undergoing matched unrelated donor versus haploidentical transplantation. Prof. McGuirk explains that upon reactivation, CMV can cause serious complications in immunosuppressed patients. The study looked at 452 patients over a five-year period and found no significant difference in the incidence of CMV reactivation or disease between the two types of transplants. It appears that African American and Hispanic American patients have a higher risk of CMV infection and disease, possibly due to greater prior exposure to the virus. This interview took place at the 49th Annual Meeting of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) held in Paris, France.
