ASCAT 2024 | Pathways for pain management in patients with SCD experiencing acute pain crises

Sanne Lugthart, MD, PhD, University Hospitals of Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, Bristol, UK, outlines the two pathways for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) experiencing an acute pain crisis. Patients may go through the emergency department pathway, ideally with their individualized pain plan being followed. Alternatively, some centers allow patients to bypass the emergency department and proceed directly to a day unit or same-day emergency care center. This interview took place at the 19th Annual Scientific Conference of the Academy for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia (ASCAT 2024) in London, UK.
