MDS 2023 | Key differences between pediatric and adult MDS

Marcin Wlodarski, MD, PhD, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, highlights differences between pediatric and adult myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Dr Wlodarski notes that pediatric MDS is rare among pediatric hematological malignancies and is associated with known germline syndromes in about 20% of cases. Dr Wlodarski further lists key differences between pediatric and adult MDS, such as bone marrow cellularity and clonal lesions. To conclude, Dr Wlodarski explains that the main therapeutic aim for pediatric MDS is cure via bone marrow transplantation (BMT). This interview took place at the 17th International Congress on Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) 2023, held in Marseille, France.
