ASCAT 2024 | Introducing the Sickle Eye Project

Christiana Dinah, BSc, MBBS, MRes, London North West Healthcare NHS Trust, Harrow, UK, introduces the Sickle Eye Project, the first and largest multicenter study on sickle cell retinopathy in the UK. The study aims to determine the prevalence of visual impairment caused by sickle cell retinopathy, correlate its stages with systemic symptoms, assess its impact on vision-related quality of life, and evaluate the acceptability of regular eye screenings. The next steps involve creating an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled database to predict which patients are at risk of severe retinopathy. This interview took place at the 19th Annual Scientific Conference of the Academy for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia (ASCAT 2024) in London, UK.
