Lewis Hsu, MD, PhD, University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago, IL, highlights the lack of evidence for prophylactic antibiotic administration during dental care in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), but suggests that those SCD patients with comorbidities or those who are immunocompromised likely should be prescribed antibiotics prior to their dental appointments.
