ASCAT 2024 | The HELIOS network: disseminating knowledge on hemoglobinopathies

In this interview, Petros Kountouris, PhD, The Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics, Lefkosia, Cyprus, introduces the HELIOS (Hemoglobinopathies in European Liaison of Medicine and Science) network and outlines its primary goals. This initiative aims to disseminate the existing knowledge on hemoglobinopathies, including sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia, through specialized training programs in the hope that this will advance healthcare systems, inform policymaking, and improve patient outcomes. This interview took place at the 19th Annual Scientific Conference of the Academy for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia (ASCAT 2024) in London, UK.

So, HELIOS is a global network that is funded by the COST Association and aims to bring together experts and different stakeholders in the field of hemoglobinopathies. So, HELIOS is a global network that is funded by the COST Association and aims to bring together experts and different stakeholders in the field of hemoglobinopathies. The main aim is to develop a comprehensive training program for hemoglobinopathies on different topics that include molecular research and diagnosis, clinical management, data management, dissemination and outreach. So all topics that are related to the field of hemoglobinopathies are covered. It’s an open network. Anyone can join from anywhere in the world. So it started last year and we have already included in the network around 200 people, so it’s maybe one of the largest networks in the field, and we have developed already several training activities like webinars, face-to-face training schools, discussion clubs with early career researchers and we are hopeful that in the next three years, that is the duration of the project, we will develop even more for the project.
