ASH 2024 | MyMPNVoice app: a novel approach to monitoring PROs and biometric data in patients with MPNs

Claire Harrison, MD, FRCP, FRCPath, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, comments on the exciting potential of MyMPNVoice, a novel smartphone app that has been developed to monitor patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and biometric data in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Prof. Harrison highlights the app’s novel approach to collecting data through smartphone wearables, symptom scores, and health information, which could lead to a digital registry and improved disease management. This interview took place at the 66th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.

So super happy to tell everyone about the MyMPNVoice app. This is not my project though. This is a project that’s been led by my lovely colleague, Patrick Harrington, in collaboration with lots of patients in the MPN Voice group and also a commercial developer called Sanius. And we are building on what’s been done in CML with something very novel for MPN patients. So many of us wear a smartphone, don’t we, that captures how many steps we walk, how well we sleep, et cetera. And so the idea is to there’s three kind of layers to this app. The one that we’re really looking at at the moment is to try to recruit several hundred patients with defined MPN who are willing to wear a smartphone watch, which we will provide. And it gets linked then to the app on their phone. And then we can collect biometrics. We ask them to fill in a symptom score. So it gives us a bit more of an accurate picture of other things like how far the patient’s walking, how well are they sleeping? How does that correlate with the MPN10, does it change with the disease, etc? So there’s some very preliminary data but I say that but there was almost 700,000 data points went into that abstract so massive amount of work and huge huge congratulations to Patrick, Debbie, Mark and the team in delivering that actually. The next step is that we’re hoping that patients will consent to allow us to also collate their health information and match it against this. So then we would have a digital registry and we’re not limited with how many patients we can have for that. And then finally, the next layer is to just have this as an app which links to disease information. So I’m super excited about it and calling out the massive amount of work that other people have done. It’s really exciting.
