BSH 2022 | The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hematology nursing

Finn Tysoe, RN RM , Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Oxford, UK, comments on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hematology nurses. Mr Tysoe explains that many nurses have retired due to the stress of the pandemic, and emphasizes the importance of offering more support to incoming nurses. This interview took place at the 62nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Society for Haematology (BSH) 2022, in Manchester, UK.

I think the pandemic has had a fairly even effect across the service. Hematology has got some unique impact, but it’s mainly in relation to the specialty itself, how much experience you need in order to be an excellent hematology nurse, and the nature of the knowledge that’s required. Again, we’ve got a lot of people who are retiring post-COVID because of the stress of dealing with the pandemic...

Again, we’ve got a lot of people who are retiring post-COVID because of the stress of dealing with the pandemic. We saw a lot of people leaving the service, so a lot of newer nurses who need a lot more support and not so many people to offer that support. That’s, from my perspective, a really key challenge for heme.
