Multiple myeloma is the second most common hematological malignancy and remains an incurable disease. Diet has been linked to myeloma pathogenesis, making it an important factor to study in this disease setting.1 Additionally, known risk factors for plasma cell disorders include obesity, high leptin levels, high insulin levels, and diets lacking in plant-based foods. There is also evidence that microbiome dysbiosis plays a role in patients with these disorders.2
The NUTRIVENTION trial (NCT04920084) is investigating whether plant-based diets and certain nutritional supplements impact the risk of progression of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) or smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) to multiple myeloma. Explore this feature page to learn more about the NUTRIVENTION trial from lead investigator Urvi Shah, MD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY. Dr Shah also shares insights into the NUTRIVENTION-3 trial (NCT05640843), which is comparing a plant-based diet with supplements and placebo in individuals with MGUS and SMM, and is currently enrolling.
For those interested in more information about the trial, how to enroll patients, or how to become a participating site, please contact Dr Urvi Shah at (646)-608-3713 or email shahu@mskcc.org or castrof@mskcc.org.
