Sanne Lugthart, MD, PhD, University Hospitals of Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, Bristol, UK, comments on the importance of early intervention in preventing and managing vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). The implementation of novel predictive models will aid in identifying patients at risk of VOCs and intervening early to avoid progression to severe VOC requiring hospital admission. Dr Lugthart also emphasizes the value of educating patients and healthcare professionals on recognizing and managing VOCs. This interview took place at the 66th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.
