EHA 2022 | Incentive spirometry to prevent acute chest syndrome in adults with SCD
Anita Rijneveld, MD, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, Netherlands, outlines the rationale and results of a study evaluating whether incentive spirometry can prevent acute chest syndrome in adult patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) who are hospitalized during a vaso-occlusive crisis. Whilst the study did not show an advantage for the use of incentive spirometry in preventing acute chest syndrome, Dr Rijneveld believes that this technique might still have a role in this setting. This interview took place at the European Hematology Association (EHA) Congress 2022 held in Vienna, Austria.
