EBMT 2017 | Bettering transplant outcomes by optimizing stem cell mobilization

Riccardo Saccardi, MD, from Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy, discusses stem cell mobilization for autologous transplantation at the 2017 annual meeting of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) in Marseille, France. Mobilization is the process in which stem cells are collected before transplantation. It is usually carried out with a drug, the stem cells are counted in the blood and when the stem cell level reaches a certain threshold they are collected. Dr Saccardi explains that optimization of this mobilization process, by personalizing mobilization to each patient, is very important in order to better the outcome of the transplant for the patient.
