EBMT 2017 | GVHD: helping patients cope with the side effects of transplantation

John Murray • 27 Mar 2017

John Murray, nurse clinician at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK, discusses the nurses’ education day, focused on ‘The worst day of my life’, at the 2017 annual meeting of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) in Marseille, France. During these sessions, nurses spoke about their experiences with cancer patients throughout their journey with the disease.
During this session, John focused on a patient who suffered from graft versus host disease (GVHD) after transplantation. This disease, which affects the skin of many patients, is often very painful and uncomfortable. It is specially important to educate other nurses, on the terrible complications that can occur and inform them of how best they can help patients cope with them.
